Im Bild eine Steinhummel (Bombus lapidarius), die an einer Löwenzahnblüte Nektar saugt, und gleichzeitig mit Pollen, der an ihrem Borstenkleid hängt, die Blüte bestäubt. Der gesammelte Nektar und Pollen dient der eigenen Ernährung und auch zur Ernährung der Brut. Wie auch andere Hummeln legt die Steinhummel praktisch keine Vorräte an. Die Steinhummel ist schwarz mit einer gelbbraunen Hinterleibsspitze (im Bild nicht zu sehen). Sie war Insekt des Jahres 2005 in Deutschland und Österreich.
