Carrickfergus Castle
Carrickfergus Castle is on the north shore of Belfast Lough and is part of the town of Carrickfergus. It was built by a Norman knight, John de Courcy, and is named for a Scottish king, Fergus, who was shipwrecked and drowned there (carrick means "rock"). The castle was built in 1177 and was in use until after World War II, during which it was used as a garrison and air-raid shelter. It is now a tourist attraction. We were there twice on our recent visit to Northern Ireland, once briefly on our way up the coast, the second time with a visitor who had not seen the castle before. The second time we toured the inside of the castle, something I had not done for many years.
