By the very edge of the blue sea
lived an old man and his old woman.
For three and thirty years they had lived
in a tumbledown hut made of mud.

The old man caught fish in his fishing net;
the old woman span with her spinning wheel.
One day the old man cast his net
and all he caught in his net was slime.
The old man cast his net a second time
and all he caught in his net was weed.
A third time the old man cast his net
and what he found in his net was a fish

老人出海網捕魚
老婦紡紗在家裏
老人天天到海邊
維生只靠網補魚

La majunulo kaptis fiŝojn en sia fiŝkapta reto;
la maljunulino spinis kun sia spinrado.
Iun tagon la maljunulo ĵetis sian reton
kaj ĉiun li kaptis estis nur ŝlimo.
La maljunulo ĵetis sian reton duafoje
Kaj ĉiun li kaptis estis nur herbaĉo.
Triafoje la maljunulo ĵetis sian reton
Kaj kiun li trovis en sian reton estis fiŝo —

no ordinary fish, but a golden fish.
The fish begged, the fish begged and implored;
the fish prayed in a human voice:
'Release me, set me free in the sea —
and in return you'll receive a grand ransom,
I'll grant you whatever you wish.'
The old man was amazed and frightened.

“放我自由回大海
定以重酬獻給你”

Ne ordinara fiŝo, sed aura fiŝo.
La fiŝo petis, la fiŝo petis kaj ploris;
La fiŝo preĝis en homa voĉo:
”Liberigu min, metu min libere en la maron —
kaj kompense vi recivos grandan rekompencon,
Mi donacas al vi iun ajn vi deziras.“
La maljunulo estis merigita kaj timigita.

Three and thirty years he had fished —
and not once had he heard a fish talk.
He returned the fish to the water,
saying gently as he let her go free,
'God be with you, golden fish!
I don't need your grand ransom.
Off you go — into the deep blue sea!
Swim free, swim where you wish!'

三十三年我捕魚
未見有魚說人語
不敢要求有回報

Dum tridek tri jarojn li jam fiŝkaptis —
kaj eĉ ne unufoje li aŭdis fiŝon paroli.
Li redonis la fiŝon al la akvo,

“Bone estu kun vi, aŭra fiŝo!
Mi ne bezonas vian rekompencon.

Naĝu libere, naĝu laŭ via volo ien!

The old man went back to his old woman
and told her of this great wonder:
'Today I caught a fish in my net —
no ordinary fish, but a golden fish.
The fish spoke, she spoke in our tongue;
she begged to go home, into the blue sea.
she promised me a splendid ransom;
she said she would grant whatever I wished.
But I didn't dare take this ransom.
I set her free in the deep blue sea.'

老人高興回家去
詳述今日怪遭遇
放魚自由回藍海
有關奬賞不敢提

La maljunulo iris hejmen al sia maljunulino
kaj rakontis al ŝi pri la mirindaĵo:
Hodiaŭ mi kaptis fiŝon en mia reto —
ne ordinara fiŝo, sed aŭra fiŝo.
La fiŝo parolis, ŝi parolis en nia lingvo;
Ŝi petegis por reveni hejmen en la bluan maron.
Ŝi promesis al mi grandan rekompencon.
Tamen mi ne aŭdacis preni la rekompencon.
Mi liberigis ŝin en la profundan bluan maron.

The old woman scolded her old man:
'Simple fool, fool of a simpleton!
What stopped you taking this ransom?
A mere fish — and you were too frightened!
You could at least have got a new washtub.
Ours is cracked right down the middle.'

老婦駡夫沒出席
摧他回海找金魚
家裏浴缸破且舊
要個浴缸總可以

La maljunulino riprocis sian maljunulon:
Pura stultulo, stultulo de malsaĝulo!
Kio malhelpis vin preni la rekompencon?
Nura fiŝo — kaj vi etis timigita!
Vi povis almenaŭ akiru novan banujon.
Nia banujo estas fendita ĝuste sub la mezo.”

Off he went towards the blue sea.
(The blue sea looked a little troubled.)
He called out to the golden fish
and the fish swam up and asked him,
'What is it, old man, what do you want?'
The old man bowed to the fish and said,
'Have mercy on me, Sovereign Fish.
My old woman is cursing and scolding me.,
Though I am old, she gives me no peace.
She needs a new washtub, she says.
Ours is cracked right down the middle.
The golden fish replied straightaway,
'Take heart — and God be with you!
Outside your hut you'll find a new washtub!'

老人回到捕魚地
呼喊金魚來評理
老婆駡我沒主張
想要浴缸好沐浴

金魚傾聽恩主意
就說安心請回去
定有浴缸在門口
天主慈悲保佑你

The old man went back to his old woman.
His old woman now had a new washtub,
but she was cursing more fiercely than ever:
'Simple fool, fool of a simpleton,
all you got from the fish was a washtub.
What wealth can be found in a washtub?
Get on back, you fool, to the fish.
Bow down to the fish and say
you want a handsome house built of wood.'

La maljunulo revenis al sia maljununlino.
La maljunulino nun havis novan banujon,
“Pura stultulo, stultulo de malsaĝulo,
Ĉiujn vi gajnis de la fiŝo estis nur banujo.
Kian riĉaĵon oni trovas en banujo?
Reiru al la fiŝo, vi stultulo.
Riverencu al la fiŝo kaj diru

Off he went towards the blue sea.
(The blue sea was a little rough.)
He called out to the golden fish
and the fish swam up and asked him,
'What is it, old man, what do you want?’
The old man bowed to the fish and said,
'Have mercy on me, Sovereign Fish.
My old woman is cursing and raging.
Though I am old, she gives me no peace.
She wants a handsome house built of wood.'
The golden fish replied straightaway,
'Take heart — and God be with you!
You shall have your house built of wood.'

老人又回捕魚地

The old man set off for his hut,
but not a trace of his hut could he find.
In its place stood a house built of wood
with a whitewashed brick chimney
and two strong gates hewn from oak.

老人欣喜回家去
不見舊居見新居
新造木屋真正好
煙囱大門全都齊

La maljunulo ekiris por lia kabano,

Sed li ne trovis la spuron de sia kabano.
Sur la loko staris la domo konstruita de lingo
Kun blankfarbita brikokamentubo
kaj du fortaj pordoj hake tajlitaj de kverko.

Sitting by the window was his old woman,
swearing at him for all she was worth:
'Simple fool, fool of a simpleton,
all you got from the fish was a house.
Get on back, you fool, to the fish.
I don't want to be a lowly peasant.
I want to be a noble lady.'

Sidanta ĉe la fenestro estis lia maljuna edzino,
sakriante je li pro ĉiujn ŝi valoris:
Stultulo, stultulo de malsaĝulo,
Ĉiuj vi gajnis de fiŝo estis nur domo.
revenu al la fiŝo.
Mi ne volas esti ĉiutaga kamparanino.
Mi volas esti nobela sinjorino.‘

Off he went towards the blue sea.
(The blue sea was not calm.)
He called out to the golden fish
and the fish swam up and asked him,
'What is it, old man, what do you want?'
The old man bowed to the fish and said,
'Have mercy on me, Sovereign Fish.
My old woman is shouting and swearing,
cursing me for all she is worth.
Though I am old, she gives me no peace.
She doesn't want to be a lowly peasant.
She wants to be a noble lady.'

漁夫聽說回原地
但見海不平息
金魚現身問何事
漁夫有事口難提

金魚大王請憐惜
我家老伴發脾氣
她說村姑沒出息
要當高尚貴婦女

The golden fish replied straightaway,
'Take heart — and God be with you!'
The old man went back to his old woman
and saw? He saw a tall mansion.
His old woman was standing there in the porch.
She was wearing a splendid 'soul-warmer' —
a precious waistcoat trimmed with sable.
On her head was a brocade head-dress;
round her neck hung heavy pearls
and gold rings encircled her fingers.
On her feet were fine red boots
and before her stood zealous servants;
she was slapping them and pulling their hair.
The old man said to his old woman,
'Good day, Lady Countess Baroness!
I hope you've got all you want now!'
The old woman flew at her husband
and packed him off to work in the stables.

金魚得知其問題
便叫漁夫快回去
女伴即將成貴婦
天主慈悲保佑你

漁夫回家見老伴
貴婦就在大樓裏
全身寶氣又珠光
錦鏽頭巾貂皮衣

從僕圍繞恭敬禮
辦事若不稱心意

La aura fiŝo respondis rekte,
‘Trankviligu — Dio estu kun vi!’
La maljunulo iris hejmen al sia edzino
kaj vidis? Li vidis altan domegon.
Lia maljuna edzino staris tie ĉe la antaŭpordo,
Ŝi portis grandiozan animo-varmigilon’ —
altvaloran mantelon tonditan de zibelo.
Sur ŝia kapo estis brokada kapvestaĵo;
Ĉirkaŭ ŝia kolo pendiĝis pezaj perloj
Kaj aŭraj ringoj encirkligis ŝiajn fingrojn.
Sur ŝia piedoj estis fajnaj botoj
Kaj antaŭ ŝi staris fervoraj domservistinoj;

A week passed, and another week.
The old woman grew madder than ever.
She sent her old man back to the fish:
'Go back to the fish, bow low and say
I don't want to be a fine lady —
I want to be a mighty tsaritsa.'
The old man took fright. He implored her:
'What's got into you, woman? Are you crazy?
Have you been eating black henbane?
You don't know how to walk like a tsaritsa,
You don't know how to talk like a tsaritsa.
You'll be the laughing stock of your tsardom.'
如此已過兩星期
夫人愈來愈生氣
“只當貴婦功能少
要當女皇才希奇”

漁夫聽說苦勸妻
“你當女皇不容易
假若言行欠威風
全國臣民嘲笑你”

Pasis semajno, kaj alia semajno.
La maljuna virino fariĝis pli freneza ol ĉiam.
Ŝi revenigi sian maljunulon al la fiŝo:
‘Revenu al la fiŝo, riverencis malsupren kaj diru:
Mi ne volas esti fajna sinjorino —
Mi volas esti forta carino.’
La maljunulo timis. Li plorpetegis al ŝi:
‘Kio eniris en via kapo, virino? Ĉu vi frenezas?
Ĉu vi mangis la negran hiskiamon?
Vi ne scias piediri ĉarme kiel carino.
Vi fariĝos la ridaĵo de via careco.’

The old woman flew into a fury.
She struck her husband across the cheek:
'How dare you, peasant, answer me back?
How dare you talk like that to a lady?

老婦聽說發脾氣
一個巴掌打過去
貴婦尊貴有身分
老僕頂嘴不可以

La virino tuj furieĝis.
Ŝi frapis sian edzon trans la vangon:
‘Kamparano, kiel aŭdace disputi kun mi?
Kiel aŭdace paroli tiamaniere al sinjorino?

Back you go again to the sea — or, upon my word,
You'll be dragged there against your will.'
Off he went towards the blue sea.
(The blue sea was blacker than black.)
He called out to the golden fish
and the fish swam up and asked him,
'What is it, old man, what do you want?'
The old man bowed to the fish and said,
'Have mercy on me, Sovereign Fish.
My old woman is raging again.
She doesn't want to be a fine lady.
She wants to be a mighty tsaritsa.'

“趕快回海找金魚
否則拖你下牢獄”
老人得令到藍海
大海變黑可真奇

漁夫大聲喊金魚
金魚面前頭低低
是何原因傷意志
有話直說沒問題

大慈大悲大金魚
救我免受老伴逼
她說不想當貴婦
想當女皇展實力

Revenu al la maro — alie, sur mia ordono,
Vi estus eltrenita kontraŭ via volo.’
Fore li rapidiĝis al la blua maro.
(La blua maro estis pli nigra ol nigro.)
Li vokis al la aŭra fiŝo
kaj la fiŝo naĝis supren kaj demandis lin,
‘Kio estas, maljunulo, kion vi volas?’
La maljunulo riverencis al la fiŝo kaj diris,
‘Havu kompaton al mi, Suverena Fiŝo.
Mia maljuna edzino denove furiozis
Ŝi ne volas esti fajna sinjorino.
Ŝi volas esti forta carino.’

The golden fish replied straightaway,
'Take heart — and God be with you!
Your old woman shall be a tsaritsa.'
The old man went back to his old woman.
Before him stands a splendid palace
and his old woman is there in the hall.
She is a tsaritsa sitting at table.
Nobles are standing and waiting on her,
pouring her wines from over the seas
while she nibbles on honeycakes.
All around stand fierce-looking guards
with sharp axes poised on their shoulders…

夫人定能當女皇
但願天主保佑你

老人回家欲見妻
輝煌宮殿眼前立
殿內老妻當女皇

貴族兩旁恭敬立

La aura fiŝo respondis rekte,
‘Trankviligu — Dio estu kun vi!
Via maljunulino esto carino.‘
La maljunulino revenis hejmen al sia maljunulino.
Antaŭ li staris grandioza palaco
kaj sia maljunulino estis tie en la halo
kaj ŝi estis carino sidante ĉe tablo.
Nobeluloj staris kaj atendis apud ŝi,
gisante al ŝi vinojn de transmaroj
dum ŝi manĝetis la mielajn kuketojn.
Ĉirkaŭe staris feroceskaj gardistoj

The old man was frightened. He bowed to the ground
and said, 'Greetings, O dread Tsaritsa —
and I hope you've got all you want now!'

老人見狀生恐懼
女皇面前伏地禮
恭喜女皇登寶座
無復他求大歡喜
La maljunulo estis ŝokita.
Li kliniĝis antaŭ ŝi surteren
kaj diris, ‘Saluton, O terura carino —
kaj mi esperas ke vi jam gajnis ĉiujn vi volas nun!‘

The old woman didn't look at him;
she just ordered him out of her sight,
and her nobles and courtiers came running
and shoved the old man towards the door;
and the guards ran up with their axes
and all-but hacked him to pieces.
and everyone laughed at the old man:
'Serves you right, you ignorant lout!
Let this be a lesson to you, bumpkin!
Don't get too big for your boots
or sit in another man's sleigh!'

女皇不屑見夫面
請他立刻遠遠離
宮人貴族遵上意
把他拖到門外去

持斧守衛不客氣
把他打得半生死
大眾嘲笑老漁夫
笨蛋活該就是你

這個教訓該注意
迷糊小子看仔細
馬靴不能做太大
只聽女人太離奇

La maljunulino ne rigardis lin;
Ŝi ĝuste ordonis lin voriri de sia vido,
kaj la nobeloj kaj kortiganoj kurante aliris
kaj puŝis la maljunulo muren;
kaj la gardisto alvenis kun siaj hakiloj
kaj almenaŭ hakis lin al pecetoj,
kaj ĉiuj ridis pri la maljunulo:
‘Suferon al vi ĝuste, vi stulta laŭso.
Estu instruo al vi, stultulo!’
Ne estu tro granda por viaj botoj
Alie vi sidis en sledo de aliulo!‘

A week passed, and another week.
The old woman grew madder than ever.
She sent her courtiers to fetch her husband.
They found him and brought him before her
and the old woman said to her old man,
'Go back, bow down to the fish.
I don't want to be a mighty tsaritsa,
I want to be a sea empress;
I want to live in the Ocean-Sea
with the golden fish as my servant
to bring me whatever I ask for.'

連續經過兩星期
老婦愈變愈離奇
吩付宮人尋漁夫
請他來宮好參議

速回大海示金魚
只當女皇難满意
我要統領大海洋
又把金魚當奴隸

Semajno pasis, kaj alia semajno.
La maljunulino fariĝis pli frenezula ol ĉiam.
Ŝi sendis kortiganojn por revenigi sian edzon.
Ili trovis lin kaj portis lin antaŭ ŝi
Kaj la maljunulino diris al sia maljuna edzo,
‘Reiru , riverenu al la fiŝo.
Mi ne volas esti forta carino,
Mi volas esti la mara imperiistino;
Mi volas vivi en la Ocean-Maro
kun la aŭra fiŝo kiel mia servistino,
por alporti al mi ĉiujn mi deziras.‘

The old man did not dare say a word;
he was too frightened to open his mouth.
Off he went towards the blue sea.
Raging there was a black storm!
Waves were flinging up spray;
angry waves were crashing and howling.
He called out to the golden fish
and the fish swam up and asked him,
'What is it, old man, what do you need?'

老夫不敢說聲語
害怕女皇發脾氣
快快跑回捕魚處
一心盼望會金魚

黑風狂吹白波起
呼嘯大浪勤來襲
千呼萬呼魚始現
金魚不知出問題

La maljunulo ne aŭdacis diri vorton;
Li estis tro timiga malfermi la buŝon.
Fore li iris al la blaŭa maro.
Furioze estis nigra stormo!
Ondegoj supren svingis spruĉaĵojn;
Koreraj ondoj kolizadis kaj hurladis
Li vokis la aŭran fiŝon
Kaj la fiŝo naĝis supren kaj demandis lin,
Kio estas, maljunulo, kion vi bezonas?’

The old man bowed to the fish and said,
'Have mercy on me, Sovereign Fish!
What am I to do with the wretched woman?
She no longer wants to be a tsaritsa,
she wants to be a sea empress.
She wants to live in the Ocean-Sea
with you as her faithful servant
to bring her whatever she asks for.'
Not a word did the fish reply.
She just slapped her tail on the water
and dived deep into the blue sea.
The old man waited and waited
But that was all the answer he got.
He went back — to a hut made of mud.
His old woman was sitting outside it;
And before her lay a broken washtub.

漁夫見魚哀聲起
大慈大悲大金魚
女伴為惡連累我
不知如何能脫離

她說女皇不稀奇
要做海中女霸主
你做奴隸供使喚
為她效勞拿東西

金魚聽說未表意
拍尾潛入深海裏
漁人苦苦久等待
從此不再有訊息

漁夫回到舊時居
破舊浴缸置原地
老伴老樣倚門外
故事結束在這裏
