Typisch ist die "Warntracht" in den Farben Rot und Schwarz.Man entdeckt ihn an Ufern von Flüssen, Seen oder in feuchten Wiesen. Er ist ein flinker Läufer und jagt dort am Boden oder auf Pflanzen.Er lebt räuberisch und ernährt sich von kleinen Insekten, Milben oder Larven. Er ist also ein nützlicher Helfer im Ökosystem.Trotz der kurzen Deckflügel sind diese Käfer voll flugfähig. Ihre großen Hinterflügel sind kunstvoll unter den kleinen glänzenden Decken gefaltet und können bei Bedarf blitzschnell entfaltet werden.
