Burwell & District 50 NAU, 9 DER and 61 NAU at the Burwell garage – May 1979
May 1979 – Burwell & District Motor Service, owned by the Mansfield family, introduced its first bus in 1922 having traded as a taxi and cycle repair business in the preceding years. The original bus service ran from Burwell to Cambridge and this later had workings through from Fordham, Isleham and Soham. Market day services also ran to Newmarket and Bury St. Edmunds and summer coach services ran to Norwich/Great Yarmouth and Ipswich/Felixstowe.
The company was an early operator of the rear engined Daimler Fleetline and in the centre of this snapshot is Willowbrook bodied 9 DER bought new in August 1963. A second of the type was bought new two years later (DEB 484C). In 1976 a Northern Counties bodied example was acquired from Nottingham City Transport (87 RTO) followed by five Park Royal examples also from NCT in 1977 (50/53/56/61/63 NAU) of which 50 NAU and 61 NAU appear in the photo. After suffering an accident 50 NAU had been repaired with a newer style front end.
This photograph was taken a few weeks before the owners retired selling the business to the Eastern Counties Omnibus Company.
