A2B Travel Group YX74 OKW in Burwell - 30 May 2025 (P1210223)

Friday 30 May 2025 (1026) – The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) is embarking on a franchising model for the region’s bus services. Bus services are branded ‘Tiger’ and have a ‘T’ prefixed service number.

Two of the services introduced on Tuesday 27 May 2025 in East Cambridgeshire were the T4 (Newmarket-Burwell-Reach-Swaffham Prior-Lode-Bottisham-Fulbourn-Addenbrooke’s Hospital contracted to Stagecoach East) and T5 (Cambridge-Burwell-Fordham-Soham contracted to A2B Travel Group). Both operate hourly Mondays to Saturdays and the latter revives a direct service east of Burwell lost many years ago.

The two new services are said to replace the now withdrawn service 11 that was contracted to Stephensons of Essex. This operated from Newmarket to Central Cambridge via Burwell (including a circular serving Toyse Lane and North Street which are quite some distance from the village centre), then via either Reach or Lode, and Bottisham. The T4 does serve Toyse Lane and North Street but no longer with a direct link to Central Cambridge.

A2B Travel Group YX74 OKW, an Alexander Dennis Enviro400D new in September 2004, was seen in Burwell when operating the 1000 service T5 from Soham to Cambridge.

The buildings on the left were built on the land where the garage of the Burwell & District Motor Service once stood. B&D traded from 1922 until 1979 when the family owned business was sold to the Eastern Counties Omnibus Company.
