Plaque to mark the Burwell & District garage - 30 May 2025 (P1210226)

Friday 30 May 2025 – Burwell & District Motor Service, owned by the Mansfield family, introduced its first bus in 1922 having traded as a taxi and cycle repair business in the preceding years. The original bus service ran from Burwell to Cambridge and this later had workings through from Fordham, Isleham and Soham. Market day services also ran to Newmarket and Bury St. Edmunds and summer coach services ran to Norwich/Great Yarmouth and Ipswich/Felixstowe.

When the owners chose to retire the business was sold to the Eastern Counties Omnibus Company in June 1979. This plaque placed by the local history society and the parish council adorns the wall where the B & D property stood in the High Street.
