Swinging!

The Alena is leaving Neptune's Staircase and heading towards Loch Linnhe. In the picture you can see the A830 road bridge and the railway bridge over the Caledonian Canal have been swung open to allow her to pass through them. On the far left is the edge of the signal box that controls the railway bridge.

Neptune's Staircase, designed by Thomas Telford is a series of eight locks and is the longest staircase lock in the country.

A very well composed image with lots of interest including the swing bridges and what looks to be a hard-working boat while the person looking on gives a great ideal of scale.

HFF and good weekend!

Thank you very much Nicole. You are welcome. This is a scene that always fascinates me. I love watching boats passing through the locks to emerge at the end of Neptune's Staircase

HFF, Carol. I hope your day and your weekend are terrific.

These rises are great fun, aren't they. I have many fond memories of the Bingley Five Rise in Yorkshire which are very steep but not as long as this staircase. A great picture and information. Thank you.

Ecobird replied to Old Owl:

Thank you very much John. I have not been there but have just looked it up and it looks steep as you say and really attractive. Thank you for that. There is something really fascinating about boats making their way through a series of locks. Some days we would set off with all good intentions of not stopping until we reached where we intended, but a 'quick' stop to see what was happening here would mean we lost hours here.
