Autumn from Walfords Gibbet!
Across the fertile flatlands of the River Parrett basin to the distant mist covered Mendip Hills, from Walfords Gibbet on Somersets Quantock Hills!
Thankfully not used as a gibbet since 1789
The empty beer can is forground interest ;-))))
Brief history of Walfords Gibbet
The Crime: In July 1789, John Walford of Over Stowey murdered his wife, Jane Shorney, by beating her with a post and slitting her throat near Doddington, leaving her body near Dead Woman’s Ditch
• The Trial: Walford was tried and convicted at the Bridgwater assizes.
• The Gibbet: He was hanged in August 1789 and his body was placed in a gibbet (a structure used to display executed corpses in chains as a public deterrent) near Over Stowey and the Quantock Hills for about a year.
HFF and a great weekend! A large view may help with the mist.
