It's In The Bag

Photographed in Bath Abbey Churchyard using a Canon EOS 30D with the first AF version of the Canon EF 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 lens. Later versions abandoned the push-pull mechanics and became f/5.6 at their long ends, so from a photographer's point of view, this elderly optic is superior. I have never owned a full-frame digital Canon camera which would enable the wider angle possibilities of the lens to be realised. The original and full-frame Canon EOS 5D is now temptingly within reach in the secondhand market, but it is 20 years since its launch and the reports of its mirror falling out are legion.

The phrase "Pakistan is in the bag" originated as a mishearing of Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s famous slogan "Pakistan Zindabad" ("Long Live Pakistan") during the events surrounding the Partition of British India in 1947. When Jinnah ended a radio address with "Pakistan Zindabad," some listeners, unfamiliar with his accented Urdu, interpreted it as "Pakistan's in the bag," implying that the creation of Pakistan was certain or assured. Since then, the phrase has sometimes been used informally to mean that something is guaranteed or secured, echoing the idiom "in the bag"

I had never heard that explanation before, and I am glad to know it. Thank you.

Is the dark vignette made in post-processing, or is it made possible by thi kind of lens? It looks the same as an iPhone effect. I’m often curious as to the advantages of analog, though not curious enough to do much research on the subject.

I like the way the colours in this image are subtly highlighted…And the disquisition on ‘In the Bag’ could be the start of a whole new Group, if there weren’t too many Groups already.

Did the bag contain camera equipment ?

The Limbo Connection replied to Steve Bucknell:

(1) I used post-processing to add the vignette to emphasise the main subject and obscure the business surrounding her; (2) Thank you for complimenting the colours, although to my eye the pink and blue are scarcely subtle, but opinion is probably divided, as is so often the case in ipernity; (3) If you intend to create a new group relating to bags I will join it and infest it with pictures of camera bags. Thus this might not be one of your better ideas, although opinion (see above); (4) I do not know what the bag contained. I did not think to ask her, nor did I stay to observe what she took out or put in. But if I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that the bag contained stuff relating to the child in the buggy.

Steve Bucknell replied to The Limbo Connection:

Oh yes. I hadn’t seen the buggy.

The Limbo Connection replied to Steve Bucknell:

You didn't see the buggy because of the vignette. For some strange reason the song, 'There's a hole in the bucket' comes to mind.
