HWW Leicester East Midlands 23rd November 2025
Leicester, known as Ratae Corieltaivorum, was established by the Romans in the first century AD on the site of an older native settlement. It lies on the Lincoln to Exeter Fosse Way. The Romans developed the city and by 145 AD public baths were established in this location (foreground).
The Jewry Wall seen here formed part of this complex and the wall is the second largest piece of surviving civil Roman building in England. St Nicholas church behind the wall is the oldest church in Leicester and all the materials for the 9th-century nave were recycled from material used in the Roman bath house and forum.
HWW To everyone. Enjoy the day.
