Auckland Island flowers

The flower in the main image is from a Southern Rata tree. These form the forests on the islands. The one in the inset is a mystery. I'm no gardener, but it was near the site of the former Enderby Settlement and I suspect it may be from bulbs left at that time.

Explored.

o0o the one in the box is so pretty and looks like a magnolia flower almost,
but your main picture ... leaves like laurel and yet red stamens ... its very
unusual indeed ... o0o

tiabunna replied to beverley:

The rata flowers are native to New Zealand, Bev. There are suggestions that someone found signs of a Maori settlement on the islands dating way back (to about the 1200s), so just possibly they introduced the trees then. That other flower intrigues me though.
