Great Crested Grebe / Fuut (Podiceps cristatus)

I went to see the Grebe family today. Last week there were 2 chicks. Today there was just this one left. Hopefully he'll make it.
Taken late afternoon and again they let me get awfully close. This is uncropped.

This is gorgeous Levina! Cuteness aside, the stll water and great reflection give a mirror quality to the water. Could the other chick have been left in the nest? Hope so.

Levina de Ruijter replied to Jim Boynton:

Thanks very much, Jim! No, there's just this one chick left. They usually start out with three or four and with a bit of luck one makes it to adulthood. The chicks are always with the designated parent and are never left alone in the nest. The eggs are sometimes left by themselves but the parents to be will cover them up carefully before leaving. I'm going to check on them after the weekend. Fingers crossed!

jolie photo du grèbe huppé et de son petit (je n'en vois qu'un). Nota bene : la traduction de google n'est vraiment pas au top !

Beautiful shot of this little bird family! I didn't know that the chicks will ride the backs of the parent while swimming. Most intriguing :)

Levina de Ruijter replied to Valfal:

Oh yes. It's to protect them from both predators in the sky (Herons in particular love young Grebe) and in the water (killer fish!). And the parent will even dive with the little one(s) on its back. :)

Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving a kind comment.
