Today I heard that smugmug bought flickr. See here:

I would like to commemorate my old article from December 2016:

2018 - precision landing ;-)
And next week I'll try to forecast the lottery numbers......

Smugmug is a family owned company, so far no venture capitalist is involved. That means they had to finance the takeover from own resources and have to cover the running costs as well.
Smugmug uses AWS (or at least used in former times). Flickr has it's own servers but has been in the red for years. As far as I know Yahoo never reached a break even with flickr.
From my point of view they will have to earn money soon. Either by charging the users or by selling users' content (as yahoo already did), merchandising users' data and cutting down services.
Why might smugmug be interested in flickr? They do have a good, running site, focused on professional photgraphers. Why buying a consumer site? For sure not on account of the good pictures. I think they are interested in a social community. But why? I am really curious how they will try to get money out of flickr.....
