Ipernity Closing Down ...

Sad news indeed, but the article posted by Christophe earlier today makes it quite clear that barring a miracle this site will indeed close ... perhaps as soon as the end of January 2017.

For many of us this isn't a shock and those that were around in 2015 will no doubt remember my open letter to the team, which sought to shine a light on the fears that many were harbouring: the so-called Elephant In The Room.

However, following on from that there was so much goodwill directed to the staff from the membership and so many good ideas put forward as to how the site might be saved that we all dared to dream if not believe there was hope.

And those hopes grew when so many people moved here from Panoramio when it too closed down recently, but now their new home which many are still trying to settle into is also to be demolished. How ironic and how very, very sad.

It might not hurt if I believed that the people that run this site really had tried everything, but I don't think that's the case. I like many others have tried to engage with them both publicly and privately with little success.

I don't doubt they are sad that it is set to close, but I don't think they will miss it half as much as the people that use it regularly and who will now struggle to find an alternative home.

I think they lost heart some time ago and any recent efforts to apparently turn things around were little more than window dressing. The things that most of us would have thought might make a difference, like increasing membership fees or initiating some kind of crowd funding have not been tried.

Instead, they encouraged people to share their ipernity photos on Facebook and appointed a Community Manager.

It felt to me a bit like that old adage about rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic and now less than 12 months on it appears we have indeed been holed below the waterline and set to sink without a trace.

What a terrible shame. What a waste. What a sad day for everyone that uses this site regularly and who like me have found in ipernity not only a great site to host their photos, but a place where they have been introduced to so many great photographers and where they have made many good friends.

I know that I have certainly enjoyed my time here and I have appreciated all the visits, comments and faves that my work has attracted.

I will miss all of that.

.Sad news. Don't know what else to say.
I have seen it coming.

Any suggestions about what to do with your photos?

Not really Gary other than if the worst does come about and they make it clear the site is closing then I'd delete my photos. Don't fancy them being left on a server somewhere for who knows who to do who knows what with them at some point in the future.

Don't forget BTW to take part in my User Poll! ;)

many of us have expected this... and let me say: the members kept this community alive, they filled it with their inspirations, engagement, with all their activities ! i have accounts in other communities, too, but the members of iper have been and are unique ! without them iper would have closed much much earlier. and, btw: the end of iper isn't just caused by financial problems ! the administration ignored the interests of the members more and more over the last years, no transparence, nearly no communication, instead of that censorship, suspended accounts, mobbing artists.... for me THIS is the reason for the ruin...
now we all cry a little bit, are angry or whatever, but then we should calm down again and to think about the future - means: where we'll meet us again ?
i have accounts on flickr and in fotocommunity and i'd be glad to welcome there as much of my friends as possible !
which account i'll fill again with life, i will decide when i know where my dearest friends are going to...

This news has filled me with dismay ...

I don't know what I'm going to do with the 4,000 to 4,500 images in total that I'll have uploaded by the end of the month (I'm playing catch-up). I don't want to go back to F****r, and another removal is going to be right royal PITA.

I thought that the influx of Panoramio and other new members was a sign that progress and stability were arriving.

I will really miss this place.

It would be nice to know what it would take to keep this site going.
How much money would keep it on the go.....????

Ipernity... they lied to us... it wasnt about money... they just dont want it any more. Wish they had the guts to tell us that.

It goes without saying that I am quite saddened by this sudden announcement. How ironic that just after I contact all our sponsors for "Win a Club Membership" group to ask about the status of their committment the IP team announces it will shut down ipernity! Talk about a slap in the face!

I still have my Flickr account partly for just this reason. It is not my first choice, but now it is my only choice. For all its flaws, its group set up with discussion forums is very close to ipernity' s set up, and that means a whole lot to me; we can still have communities over there. I am so sorry that Flick doesn't work for everyone. I hope we can still keep in touch somehow...

Ip did run for several months about a year ago with minimal visible input from the team. So if the servers can work on that same basis ie subscriptions / adverts can cover the hosting costs for a while, I see no need for a shutdown.

If it was a money issue I would gladly pay a yearly double fee.
I doubt it's about money though.
Might be a partnership issue.

So there are only 3000 paying Ipernity members and to pay just one single extra developer (when at least 4-5 are needed) they would need 6000 club members! Says it all, doesn't it?
Even if they find someone to take over, how will that someone tackle that problem?

Thanks Sara for the link. It's an interesting read, but I fear its much easier to make positive noises than it is to make positive change.

I fear this will prove to be yet another false dawn! :(
