Abbotsbury Monastery Remains.

Some time ago I came across a Victorian photograph (PiP) and recognised the location immediately. It took me a while to find a photo that I had taken from a similar spot. I hadn't realised it was as long ago as 2013! The 2nd PiP is St Catherine's Chapel, high on a hill next to the monastery remains.

001 Abbotsbury.

018-2 St Catherines Chapel.

Abbotsbury housed a Benedictine community founded in 1044 by Orc, a house steward of King Cnut. Its layout probably followed the normal Benedictine pattern of that time, with the monastic buildings grouped around a cloister to the south of the church.

I love the framing and the ancient architecture, Rosa. The curve of the arch complements well the triangular shape of the gable-end. Cheers, Joe

Eine schöne Komposition! Der Vergleich mit dem alten Foto zeigt, dass sich nicht verändert hat.

The arch provides a lovely fame for the monastery , it made me curious as to how many there were between 800 and 900 were dissolved which would have housed around 12,000 people most towns of any size would have had at least one. A belated Happy Birthday Rosalyn

Qué reportaje tan curioso. Transcurridos bastantes años los elementos siguen ahí desafiando la erosión del tiempo; ahora con el arco adornado de trepadoras. El monasterio se conserva y la fotografía lo muestra bien.

The grey sky and the sun -as well as the perspective- are giving a lot of relief to this beautiful photograph, Rosalyn.
