"Sharp focus is a bourgeois concept"

So said Henri Cartier-Bresson. And every now and again I like to drag that quote out.

But I do actually, really, have an excuse.

I was trying to get some fresh air and sun because my head and lungs have been addled for three days with a cold. Then this guy suddenly appeared, a sure sign of spring. He landed about three metres from me and I did get a couple of sharp pictures. Then, seemingly unaware of me standing there, he flew in closer, not much more than arm's length from me. When I took this picture, badly focused, he flew away.

My excuse: uhh, I don't know. What was I saying?

Nice picture anyway. Who needs focus, hey?

HC-B's quote is one I drag out frequently, too. "Does the picture please you?" should be the only criterion.

It is a good criterion. And so is its corollary or alternative even: “Does it please me?”
