Young sharpie
I assume this is an immature sharp-shinned hawk -- I understand that they, the young ones, tend to be more brown in their backs, in contrast to the steely grey backs of adults.
This one had been on the rail of our deck in the rain for about fifteen minutes, filling himself on the meat of a much smaller bird. At this point he had turned away from that spot, and considered his spot to sit and digest. He took off a moment later, flew up into the nearest tree, and sat there for twenty minutes. Then he quietly went on his way again.
I am not sure, but I think the bird he ate was an American goldfinch.
