Das Siel von Neuharlingersiel
Das erste Siel an dieser Stelle wurde bereits 1693 erbaut. Die letzte Erneuerung fand 2015 statt.
Ein Siel ist lt. Wikipedia
ein verschließbarer Gewässerdurchlass in einem Deich. Tideabhängig erfolgt das Schließen normalerweise durch höheren Druck bei höherem Wasserstand auf der Meerseite, das Öffnen dagegen durch höheren Druck von der Binnenseite bei niedrigerem Wasserstand auf der Meerseite. Ein Siel ist also ein Ventil zur passiven Entwässerung des hinter dem Deich gelegenen Binnenlandes, besonders als Teil des Entwässerungssystems von Marschgebieten. Der Begriff ist wahrscheinlich eine aus dem Friesischen stammende Wortbildung, die auf das Verb seihen zurückgeht, und bezeichnet demnach die Stelle, wo Wasser ausfließen kann.
