Thanks, Steve, especially for acquainting me with Sutcliffe. A brilliant photographer, and one who was excommunicated for a single photograph. Quite the lad. Then Edward VII, also quite the lad but also head of the church that excommunicated him, bought a copy of it.
He could have avoided excommunication if he'd agreed to remove the photo from public view, but he wouldn't. He seems to have been excommunicated only at the church he attended, but it's still an interesting story.
Makes me wonder in what places his photos of those boys would still be deemed unacceptable. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose, as a Canadian might say.
