The Washington Monument

At 555 feet tall, the Washington Monument is the second tallest structure in the Washington, D.C. It was the tallest structure in the world from the date of its completion in1884 until 1889, and it was the tallest monument in the United States until the completion of the San Jacinto Monument in 1939.

The tower beside it is the Old Post Office Pavillion which dates from 1899. At 315 feet and thanks to strict building height rules, it is the second largest occupied building in Washington, D.C.
