What always frightens me about the Colorado -- very mixed uses. Besides the four kayaks and the speedboat, there's also a jet ski in this picture (barely visible behind the speedboat).

We took a night time kayak tour on Lake Mead when we were out there a couple of years ago. At some point, we heard a speed boat flying toward a gap in the rocks, but we could see neither the gap nor the boat, as he didn't have any lights. He passed far closer than I would have preferred.

He was breaking the law if this was at all recently. For some years nighttime boating on Mead has been forbidden except in an emergency. At least since 2001 when we rented a houseboat, anyway--

I don't think that's well enforced. I've camped there a number of times in the past decade and could clearly here boats out on the water late at night, even though my campground was a fair distance from the shore.

It's entirely possible. It's one thing to Pass A Law, quite another to make people pay attention, particularly when there are all sorts of other issues also demanding the authorities' attention. Not something always appreciated by wanna-be social engineers! ;)
