Sous le vieux porche (XIVème siècle)

LA LEGENDE DE N-D DE L'EPINE : Selon la légende, un pèlerin, rapportant du lait de la Vierge de Terre Sainte, se serait endormi au pied d'une aubépine après y avoir suspendu la sacoche contenant la relique. A son réveil, l'arbre avait grandi et le pèlerin ne put attraper son bien. Hadouin, évêque du Mans, de passage en ce lieu, promit de construire un monastère sur place - et l'aubépine se courba ! Ainsi aurait été fondé Notre-Dame-de-l'Epine.

THE LEGEND OF OUR-LADY-OF-THE-THORN: According to legend, a pilgrim, bringing back milk from the Virgin of the Holy Land, would have fallen asleep at the foot of a hawthorn after having hung the bag containing the relic. When he awoke, the tree had grown and the pilgrim could not catch his bag. Hadouin, bishop of Le Mans, passing through this place, promised to build a monastery on the spot and - the hawthorn bowed down! This is how "Notre-Dame-de-l'Epine" was founded...
