Whiteout

My friend and I were walking on a snowy plateau in the hills of Scotland when a cloud enveloped us. Suddenly everything was white and it was very surreal. Knowing where you are in this situation is essential.

A map is essential for any trip especially in the hills. I remember climbing Yr Garn with my husband many years ago. The weather was absolutely fine until we neared the top, then we were in thick fog. There was a very steep gully to our left called 'The Devi's Staircase, so Adrian veered right knowing it was much safer that way. When we eventually came down a bit further to see where we were, there was an unrecognizable (at first) mountain tarn in view. Quite frightening really.

It usually is, but in this instance we knew where we were and luckily there were no big drops nearby.

Your friend would be photographing absolute white then. A high risk situation here. Best wishes, Anton.

Chris Bowness replied to Anton Cruz Carro:

Thank you Anton, he was taking a video on his phone. I've got it somewhere and he sweeps round to me with my camera. The terrain was on our side and it also didn't last too long, so we were lucky.

A great high-key shot demonstrating the condition on these hikes. Thing could turn beautiful or dangerous in a moment no doubt. Well done.

Chris Bowness replied to Herb Riddle:

Thank you, Herb. Yes in rougher terrain this would have been more worrisome.
