The High Lighthouse, or Pillar Lighthouse at Burnham on Sea captured in evening light.
Standing 30m high the lighthouse was designed and built by Joseph Nelson in 1832.
Burnham has had three lighthouses, only one of which is still working and that is the lower, stilted lighthouse which worked in conjunction with the High Lighthouse to keep shipping safe. The third lighthouse, a round tower on the Esplanade was deactivated and reduced in height when the High Lighthouse was built to replace it.
The High Lighthouse was itself deactivated in 1993 and sold the following year. It was sold on to an anonymous buyer in 2018 as a private residence but still retains the Fresnel lens and prism panels in the tower as this is a Grade II listed building. The red stripe down the side also remains and is still used in conjunction with that of the lower lighthouse as a leading mark.
The River Parrett flows into the Bristol Channel here and with it's mud flats, shifting sands and the second highest tidal range in the world the risk to shipping is quite significant. Over the years I have no doubt many seafarers have welcomed the sight of the guiding light to help them navigate the difficult waters.
I liked the moody winter sky tinged with pink and the way the light caught the lighthouse.
I have added a piece of music called 'Lights Out' by Brian Culbertson
