Die massiven Festungsmauern und die imposante Hafenfestung Koules zeigen besonders deutlich, warum die Venezianer ihre Vormachtstellung hier vom 13. bis ins 17. Jahrhundert hinein verteidigen konnten. Das osmanische Reich beherrschte anschließend die Insel bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Heraklion was once one of the most important ports of the Venetians, who ruled Crete from 1204 to 1669. Throughout the city you can therefore see buildings from this period. The massive fortress walls and the imposing Koules harbour fortress show particularly well why the Venetians were able to defend their supremacy here from the 13th to the 17th century. The Ottoman Empire subsequently controlled the island until the end of the 19th century.
