Die ökonomische Bedeutung als Schädling ist aber gering. Die Imagines werden gelegentlich als Blütenbesucher, besonders an Doldenblütlern, beobachtet, wo sie Nektar aufnehmen.

This Spotted Crane Fly (Nephrotoma appendiculata) was resting on a plant stem in the sunlight when I discovered it. The larvae of the spotted crane fly sometimes cause damage by feeding on the roots of cultivated plants, such as grasses (including cereals), sugar beet, cabbage and flax. However, their economic impact as pest is minor. The imagines are occasionally observed as flower visitors, especially on umbellifers, where they feed on nectar.
