The cityscape was badly damaged in the devastating bombing raid on 16 March 1945 and thousands of people died ("Würzburg, the grave on the Main"). The Würzburg Residenz with its courtyard garden and Residenzplatz, which was also badly damaged in the war and subsequently restored, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981.
