Anfang Juni diesen Jahres erlebten meine Frau und ich zum ersten Mal in Island das Phänomen, dass es in der Nähe des Polarkreises zu dieser Zeit in der Nacht nicht richtig dunkel wird, sondern die ganze Nacht über die Landschaft in eine leichte Dämmerung getaucht ist. Die Lichtstärke ist noch so groß, dass man ohne große Mühe lesen kann.
Das Bild wurde kurz vor Mitternacht MEZ ganz in der Nähe unseres Hotels aufgenommen. Man sieht die Landschaft im Vordergrund in leichter Dämmerung, während der mächtige Vatna-Gletscher (der größte Gletscher Europas und der zweitgrößte der Welt) noch in grellem Sonnenlicht leuchtet. Das war eines der schönsten Erlebnisse auf unserer Island-Reise.

At the beginning of June this year, my wife and I experienced for the first time in Iceland the phenomenon that it is not really getting dark at night near the Arctic Circle at this time of year, but that the whole night over the landscape is immersed in a slight twilight. The light intensity is still so great that one can read without much effort.
The picture was taken shortly before midnight CET near our hotel. One sees the landscape in the foreground immersed in a mild twilight light, while the mighty Vatna Glacier (the largest glacier in Europe and the second largest in the world) still glows in bright sunlight. This was one of the most beautiful experiences on our Iceland trip.
