I tried that once during my experimental years. You just drift off for a few hours. It's wasted time.
Waldviertel grey poppy seeds also contain less than 1 microgram of alkaloids per gram of seeds. You'd have to eat a few kilos to notice anything.
There are various substances that can be derived from the poppy plant. While poppy alkaloids themselves may seem intriguing, I would agree that experimenting with them could lead you to discover other substances that are more interesting, more valuable, less dangerous, and potentially capable of providing meaningful spiritual experiences.
And you are correct: the seeds contain only minimal amounts of active opium alkaloids and are commonly used in our countries as a filling for delicious cakes and pastries.
