It is located upstream the bridge. After crossing this, on the roundabout, the first exit to the right takes you there (Azenhas do Guadiana). Google maps (satellite view) also provide a view.

I did drive upstream to the bridge that crosses into Spain and drove back down on the Spanish side

I see. You drove from Mértola to Pomarão, crossing the bridge near the dam. It's right there where Guadiana becomes again the border between Portugal and Spain, till its mouth.
