Near Tahua (3868m) on the shores of Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat. This Aymara woman has gathered tola (Parastrephia lepidophylla), a resinous shrub of the Asteraceae family that grows in the Altiplano and that in the absence of trees is used for firewood. Young tola leaves are also used for brewing infusions (tea).

When I visited Bolivia the villagers had just got small solar panels and one energy saving bulb per household- before there was no electricity at all! They usually didn't have running water or toilets. No mobile phone reception and a public telephone was only in larger villages... The mobile phone reception might have changed now.
