There used to be hundreds of sandstone—marés in the local vernacular—quarries on the island. Today, only three active quarries remain: the San Esteban Quarry and the Son Salord Quarry, both located in the Ciutadella municipality, and the S'Algar Quarry around Sant Lluís. The San Esteban Quarry is set to close in a couple of years and the S'Algar Quarry is also in the process of shutting down. This decline in sandstone quarrying is due to the adoption of cinder blocks in the construction industry.
