Tevis's book was The Man Who Fell to Earth. It is usually found in the "Science Fiction" bookshelves, but it is much more than that. It is a very poetic story. I'm sure that you would like it. Nicolas Roeg made a film based on it, but comparatively, the film is rather vulgar despite an outstanding cast that includes David Bowie, Candy Clark, Buck Henry, and Rip Torn.
