Tourism was invented once by the English upperclass. The Chiemsee, the largest Bavarian lake, was not part of the Grand Tour. Mass tourism came to the area in the 1950s/1960s. The shipping company ("Chiemsee Schifffahrt") has probably invested a lot into ships at that time. Even the benches of the new ships were nicely upholstered and covered with very tasteful designs.
