Carved tenon heads decorate the walls of a semi-subterranean temple, which is located in the Kalasaya forecourt. To modern Western society, this symbolism may seem macabre, but the heads may have symbolized the benevolent presence of the gods / ancestors in a place which played host oto religious, administrative and political functions and may, therefore, have helped to secure, in the eyes of the Tiwanakans, the smooth running of their society
