In Burnet’s eyes the doctrine of the “real Cabala” (the ancient Jewish tradition of mystical interpretation of the Bible, first transmitted orally and using esoteric methods (including ciphers). It reached the height of its influence in the later Middle Ages and remains significant in Hasidism.) by contrast, is an echo of divine revelation and represents a vestige that can give us a genuine idea of antediluvian philosophy, the “antique Cabala” explains “the emergence of all things from the first cause and then return back into it” ; it relies on the old tenet “ex nihilo nihil fieri” : nothing can come from nothing. Burnet explains that the emanation doctrine is built on the notion of an “En soph that contains everything” Hence the true meaning of “creation” is that “God unfolds and evolves by emanations and outflows – a process that is explained by the metaphors of “vases and flasks” received that outflow, or by rays of light. According to Burnet this is precious what “the old wise ones” had taught about origins. ` Page 203
