"Leaves of Three, Let it Be!"

Closeup of Eastern Poison Ivy Toxicodendron radicans, shot at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, New York City. This special place is part of the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area.

The active compound in the plant's sap that causes the often virulent skin reaction, including rash and blistering is called urushiol. But many birds and other animals eat the plant and its seeds with no ill effect.

It really is a rather pretty plant. Its danger was impressed on me at a very early age. I still bump into it from time, since it is really everywhere on this continent.

Thanks for your visit and input, Ronald! I had a couple of "run-ins" with T.radicans in my youth, but eventually learned from my misadventures! Later as a National Park Ranger, I often had to incorporate poison ivy safety into formal interpretive programs to visitors or into written info for the public on park safety.

A beautifully detailed close up shot John. It's actually quite pretty..................but I'm glad we don't have any in the UK (as far as I know).
