ETS Eastern Tiger Swallowtail [ Papilio glaucus ] -

A familiar eastern butterfly in North Carolina -
The yellow ones are male and female -
Dark ones are always female -

This one has ragged wings -
But quite able to fly -
Have seen them with entire bottom of wings missing -
They still fly !

Fabulous collage of my favourite family if butterflies. We get swallowtails in some profusion here too (slightly different markings but essentially the same). But in the European case the white and yellow versions are distinct varieties.
