Wilhelm Brandes (1824-1871); German tenor.
In 1847 he started his career in Vienna at the “Hofoper” where he remained two years. From 1849-1856 he was engaged at the “Hofoper von München” and from 1862-1870 he was “First Heldentenor” at the “Hoftheater von Karlsruhe”. He had great success as Florestan in “Fidelio”, Hüon in “Oberon”, Jean de Leyde in “Le Prophète”, Raoul in “Les Huguenots” and Robert in “Robert le diable”. He was also a famous concert and oratorio singer. He had to end his career early because of an incurable mental inllness. He died in a psychiatric facility.
