The associations are not mine. I only discovered them. They are allusions to the painting by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger. Henry Holiday built them into this illustration to Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark. His pictorial allusions parallel run parallel to Carroll's textual allusions.
