Zuhause

Ich gebe die Speckwürfel in die heiße Pfanne. Sie zischen sofort, das Fett spritzt leicht. Hinter mir, am Küchentisch, sitzt er und zeichnet.

"Ich habe Ferien", sagt er unvermittelt, ohne aufzublicken. "Ich will nur hier sitzen und Pferde zeichnen."

Ich nehme die feinen Zwiebelwürfel und gebe sie zum knusprigen Speck. Es zischt lauter, der Duft steigt auf, süß und scharf zugleich.

Ich lächle.

"Es ist schön", sage ich, "wenn zwei auf die gleiche Weise einen an der Waffel haben."

Er sagt nichts, zeichnet weiter. Aber ich sehe, wie seine Mundwinkel sich heben.

Ich rühre die Zwiebeln um, höre das Kratzen seines Stifts auf dem Papier, rieche den Speck.

Zuhause.

I drop the bacon pieces into the hot pan. They sizzle instantly, fat spitting slightly. Behind me, at the kitchen table, he's drawing.

"I'm on holiday," he says out of nowhere, without looking up. "I just want to sit here and draw horses."

I take the finely chopped onions and add them to the crispy bacon. It hisses louder, the smell rises, sweet and sharp at once.

I smile.

"It's nice," I say, "when two people have got a screw loose in the same way."

He says nothing, keeps drawing. But I see the corners of his mouth lift.

I stir the onions, hear the scratch of his pencil on paper, smell the bacon.
