HBM—Teatro Municipal, Iquique, Chile (DSC-5368)

Construction of the Teatro Municipal began in 1886, shortly after Chile annexed the area from Peru, following the War of the Pacific and was finished in 1889. It is located in the Atacama desert, the driest in the world. The theater was constructed from Oregon pine, which was brought to Iquique by clipper ships from the United States. It has 784 seats.

In Britain we rarely get any news from South and Central America and so I suspect most people would be hard-pressed to locate the places you mention. Nevertheless, I find it astonishing that anything could be built in the Atacama Desert, let alone a luxurious theatre / cinema hall!!
Splendid shot!
