First Aerial Cross of the Atlantic South, 1922
Replica in steel of the hydroplane "Santa Cruz"
The successful aerial cross took place in 1922, by the Portuguese Navy aeronauts Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral, in a mono-engine hydroplane Fairey F-III - D MkII, specially designed for this purpose. Sacadura Cabral was the pilot and Gago Coutinho the navigator. The last one had adapted an artificial horizon to a sextant for measuring the altitude of the stars, revolutionary aerial invention by the time.
