Coimbra, Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha (1)

The monastery was built in the 14th century on the left bank of the Mondego River, but had to be abandoned in the 17th century due to frequent floods. The well preserved Ghotic ruins were excavated in the 20th century, more than 300 years after being abandoned. The ruined church recently reopened to the public after 12 years of restorations with a new visitor center.

Christel Ehretsmann replied to Armando Taborda:

though I agree restauration is a good thing, I must say I prefer the dramatic poetry of that church before its restauration
it was unique ! and you offered me a great emotion and shock to be able to recognise "my" little sinking abbey

Armando Taborda replied to Christel Ehretsmann:

...you are right but, probably, within 100 or 200 years time the church would sink forever...
