There Is Only A Shut Window And The Whole World Outside

Tavira, Church of Carmo (2)
................................................

To see the fields and the river
It isn't enough to open the window.

To see the trees and the flowers
It isn't enough not to be blind.

It is also necessary to have no philosophy.

With philosophy there are no trees, just ideas.

There is only each one of us, like a cave.

There is only a shut window, and the whole world outside,
And a dream of what could be seen if the window were opened,
Which is never what is seen when the window is opened.

by Alberto CAEIRO (Fernando PESSOA), April of 1923

Com dois anos e meio de intervalo olhámos para a mesma fachada...

...and the window was then open...

...o Alberto Caeiro diria que "o sonho que poderias ter visto com a janela aberta, nunca seria o que se vê quando se abre a janela"...

great "no philosophy" world
we but need our feelings ,our 5 senses and our heart

Armando Taborda replied to Christel Ehretsmann:

"I don't believe in everything but the existence of my sensations; I have no other certainty, not even of the outer universe conveyed to me by those sensations. I don't see the outer universe, I don't hear the outer universe, I don't touch the outer universe. I see my visual impressions; I hear my auditory impressions; I touch my tactile impressions. It's not with the eyes but the soul that I see; it's not with the ears but with the soul that I hear; it's not with the skin but with the soul that I touch. And if someone should ask me what the soul is, I will answer that it's me."
