Round The Island Race 2019 (4)

It was a glorious day, the conditions for watching the race could not have been better.

A scene from the annual yacht race around the Isle of Wight.
The course is about 50 nautical miles (93 km) long. It was first held in 1931.
These days there are well over a thousand teams that enter their yachts in the race.
The entrants set off at staggered times and I believe the winner is calculated on some sort of handicap basis, according to the type of vessel etc.

The 2019 race was a long tactical one, due to the low wind conditions and various tides. It was won by a local skipper Jo Richards and his friends David Rickard and Duncan De Boltz, a crew of just three, on their yacht, "Eeyore" an Alacrity 18 Bilge Keel from Cowes. Their yacht was the smallest boat in the race.
