Koluskap and Beaver

Koluskap was the mythical caretaker of the Wolastogqiyik First Peoples (Maliseet tribe). Their legend says in times long ago, beavers were huge animals feared by the Wolastoqiyik. The fiercest huge beaver built a dam where the freshwater river met the tidal Bay of Fundy, flooding all the Wolastoqiyik villages and hunting lands. After negotiations failed, Koluskap smashed the dam and nearby cliffs with his huge hammer, creating the rapids and reversing falls; and consigned beavers, forever after, to be animals of small size.
