Fantastic macro, Reginhart. These bugs just seem to love Queen Anne's lace! Quite a romantic spot for a ... ehm ... (can't really say tete a tete, can I?) ... date!
Many thanks! But if you mention the spot…., if my research is correct the plant they had their (ahem…) tete à tete on is Conium maculatum, one of the most poisonous plants in Europe Sokrates the Greek philosopher was executed with this herb...
You are right, Reginhart. I thought Queen Anne's lace because that's where I have most often seen them, but looking more carefully this does look like hemlock.
Well, I must say that I was shocked by the fact that there is so much of this poisonlus flower around here. This afternoon I took some of the leaves and rubbed it between my fingers. Quèen Anne's lace would have smelled rather aromatic but this plant doesn't smell at all. So it must be hemlock....
The best way to tell them apart is to look at the stalks. Queen Anne's lace has a green stalk with little hairs on it. Hemlock has a smooth stalk with reddish/purple splotches on it (the more so at the base). See also this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAdz7r7jM0U
I'll have a closer look tomorrow. This plant is growing everywhere around here. I just known one place where another similar plant called Giersch is growing in larger numbers.
