Govan, Glasgow
The sculptor, Andrew Brown, designed the group to show “Mrs Barbour’s Army”, the ordinary women, men, and children who marched, protested, and resisted evictions during the rent strikes. The children in the sculpture stand for:
the families threatened with eviction
the young people who joined the marches
the moral force of the community
the idea that the struggle was for future generations
The placard this young boy holds, “The will of the people is the law”, echoes the democratic, grassroots nature of the movement.
